Pros & Cons Of Using Industrial Bolts For A Building Project At Home

Posted on: 7 May 2019

You have a building project that you are planning and you are starting to look at the different fastener options for the task at hand. You plan to use bolts, but you notice that there are industrial-grade bolts available in addition to the standard models. Take a look at some of the pros and cons of industrial bolts to help you decide what is the best option.

Pro: Industrial bolts will be made of more durable materials.

One of the biggest advantages of working with industrial fasteners of any type is the fact that they can be created to be durable and long-lasting. It is not uncommon for industrial fasteners to come with lengthy warranties against defects because the pieces are so reliable.

For example, you may find bolts made from titanium and steel, because when combined, these two metals can withstand excessive weight to ward off problems with breakage.

Con: Industrial bolts may end up costing you a little more than standard bolts.

If you see industrial bolts priced a little higher than a standard package of bolts, you really should not be surprised. These bolts are made to certain specifications and standards. Some have to be tested in laboratories for strengths and resilience.

Therefore, these bolts can be a little costlier than traditional fasteners. Yet, it is a worthy price to pay to get fasteners that can be so easily counted on to do their job for the long term.

Pro: Industrial bolts are more likely to have plated protection with metal alloys.

Plated protection is hugely important in some applications. For example, a steel bolt may be plated with a copper head to thwart problems with corrosion over time. Many industrial units are coated or plated with different metal alloys to achieve certain desirable effects, which makes it easier to find pieces that will work specifically for the project you have in mind.

Con: Industrial bolts are not always available in as many sizes at local stores.

Industrial bolts are made in many different shapes, sizes, and thread widths, but the standard bolts made for consumer use tend to offer a broader range or selection in hardware stores. In some cases, it can be a little harder to find an industrial bolt that is specifically the size that you need for your project at a local hardware store. However, most can be ordered online from an industrial fasteners supplier.
